Harbinger of doom is the bird that caws in augury of death. How detestable the sinister bird was never condoned for his singing impaired unlike the lark or the immaculate dove adored by all. Clad in black plumage, the passerine watches grimly in patience awaiting things you know not, squinting dark eyes he sees the unthinkable you feared and on great wings he reached for where you dread.

The bird of ill omen, so wrong for this world. He comes with prognostications and leaves with a tragedy. From the troubled world, of tribulations and wars, he carries with him a soul to infinite time of serenity, across darksome lands bled of lava streams and over twilit mountains to where reunion waits in the land of deads. Eternity. Like a psychopomp, the crow and his corvidae! Their mission so misunderstood.

Man chose to believe the things he wants to believe. So wrong was man and his sorry world that he brought upon. The bird so wronged an evil bird. Thus to this troubled world, the counting rhyme goes; One for sorrow, two for joy, three for lass and four for lad. Five for silver, six for gold, seven for truth and eight for lie. Nine for heaven, ten for devil and next, I can nae tell you.

A crow.

Swan lake (finale) sounds like this HERE, composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. The Swan Lake is an old Russian folk tale. In summary, a story of Odette, the princess who turned into a swan under the evil spell cast by a sorcerer, Von Rothbart. She was then discovered by Siegfried, a young prince (as usual) when she was granted her human form for a short period each day. Siegfried was deeply in love with Odette that he sworn his eternal love for her but was tricked by the sorcerer one day when he magically guised another maiden in the form of accursed Odette. However, Siegfried discovered the sorcerer’s plot that he left for the lake in search for Odette who had turned into a swan forever and nevermore back to herself. Odette in despair ended her life and Siegfried (very usual) followed. Only then, their death removed Von Rothbart the sorcerer’s power and freed the rest of the cursed maidens who’d became swans under the evil spell like Odette.

Wildlife Art. The Allosaurus. Painted with Corel Painter 11 on an Apple Mac Pro. Revisiting my past as a children’s book illustrator from a publishing house. Days back in 1993, painting dinosaurs was great fun and some frustrations along with it. I would like to do it again today for the nostalgic sake.

I admired artists who contribute to the National Geographic, with high regards and aspirations to paint “good” dinosaurs. The amazing oil painters who not only painted picturesque landscapes of prehistoric eras, also the dinosaurs were incredibly painted with realistic thick, scaly hides, the impression of habitat and behaviours.

Today, I’m experimenting on what I could have used in the past, which is acrylic instead of watercolors for the dinosaurs that I did in the past. But due to time and the environmental limitations, I chose the software simulation for real medium. With little time I could spare for this one, I got away with the environment by creating a lake as the behemoth waded, carefully through the shallow bank. I would have added the bank on the opposite side of the lake along with coniferous forest.

So what’s the fun thing about painting dinosaurs? Well, most artists will invent their own dinosaur skin colours and most interesting of all, are the camouflage patterns on them. Like for example, stripes or spots as people believe, like any creatures in our modern world have protections against being seen by their preys or predators. And like most animals, they have distinctive marks or colours defining their genders as well.

YEARS came by, the more I realised the need to revisit the past, to pick the fragments of my own forgotten history. Gather them and put them together to whatever it’ll turn out to be. But the fragments are but the shards of broken dreams if they are worth reminiscing even at all. It’s probably the result of obliterating my past, to alter my past to change my life for betterment? Perhaps my endeavour failed and oblivious to me that I do not recognise myself any longer. As to who I really was and has he left me? But how have I failed and to define that failure.

So, where did I begin as a commercial artist and lasted into the twilight of my career today. The return to my past with the visit to art groups such as OIC (Organisations of Illustrators Council) and next meeting some people of Urban Sketchers was a way to see myself through a mirror. And I realised, to the greatest horror is that the narcissistic monster in me has left or has it changed, instead? It was a completely different feeling meeting people and facing their work, as compared to how it was like knowing people and confronting their work. I learned to shake hand and how did this happen remain strange to me or should this be depressing? I know not, which is disturbing. Maybe, it all lies in the fact that I got tired of living altogether.

Music Art. This picture to the larger world, there are two planes flying over the countryside under the cold and wet English weather. To me, it’s aviation glory, war and hopes for the people of the time, 1940s. And the greatest music written to the film “First of the Few”, released in 1942. Thus today, my tribute to the work of Sir William Turner Walton (29 March 1902 – 8 March 1983), a renowned English composer. And I have to thank Carolyn Lim for the accidental yet remarkable photograph that made this piece of art happened!

SpitFire Prelude

SUBJECT – Supermarine SpitFire. These war planes of the RAF (Royal Air Force) were the marvelous designs that soared the air squaring up against Adolf Hitler’s great armadas. They were the advance fighter planes in the battle of Britain, that became part of propaganda machine that heralded hopes to the people.

MUSIC – A film “First of the Few” was made to honour and commemorate the work of R.J Mitchell, chief designer at Supermarine. The composer was Sir William Turner Walton, whom I regard the master of pomp music who wrote the scores for the prelude and fugue. The same composer for Crown Imperial, Orb and Sceptre and many more. The music for the film “First of the Few” opens with the SpitFire Prelude. That sounds like this, SpiteFire Prelude music

This is one that I had contemplated long enough to the state that I almost forgot about it. I can paint all kinds of aviation scenes but to paint music that affects me the way I feel it, is something as close to touching the intangible. To the point that I can hear the piece of music from my artwork. And this very day, I stumbled across this photograph taken by someone (Carolyn Lim) in FaceBook whom I have to credit for my success in this piece of work. Now, this is a normal snap-and-post photograph of a rainy day that at first I had a feeling for it. Revisiting that photograph for several days, which I knew it carried a message that seem to be reminding me of something until I realised, that the photograph sounds like a piece of music. Soon enough, decidedly, it’s “SpitFire Prelude”. Her photograph of an impending storm with sun ray became the perfect composition to emerging strength. The ground created a slow advance of something from the rain clouds. There is a lot of strength in that photograph, not victorious neither over glorifying. There is courage in the photograph that carried a slow, passing sense of pride. A sense of hope coming from and amidst the troubles. The last touch perhaps, should be achieving an old vintage look with dirt brown washes.

NOTE: “First of the Few” derived from quoted speech by British wartime Prime Minister, Sir Winston Spencer Churchill and it reads “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” However, the Hawker Hurricanes, the older fighter planes shouldered the equal contribution to the fight against the Luftwaffe crossing the English Channel.

Corel Painter 11 test on portrait painting. This is somebody with a very interesting grin. I’m not often affected by people with interesting facial features and even if it does, I’ll probably just talk about it. Now this, is a very interesting grin that gave me a reason to do portrait art which is never my cup of tea. The software test-pilot portrait or paint doodle became serious business.

Mdm Tia Boon Sim

This is Mdm Tia Boon Sim (Founder of the Urban Sketchers). To be the very first in my august collection of people illustration. By accident through a paint experiment, she is now part of the repository after painstaking salvage work, meticulously. Blinded by impatience, the important features such as her cheek, chin and mild wrinkles were done with lacklustre effort. But these constituted the Mdm Tia grin and thus far to me, this is the person herself I have achieved as compared with the one that made appearance in FaceBook was someone who resembles her in a picture that is to me contemptuously failed, a horrible work. Ashamed of my own work hence, I sat back, some rumination over the flaws and do justice to this piece. And overcoming fear of painting freckles and wrinkles.

Well, with grit and surmounted, it’s done and succeeded. A heavy load off my chest, and I know it’s good work when I can look at the picture again and again without a single pang of shame anymore. Most unbelievable was that a paint doodle that became serious painting. The next important people for my portrait venture might be Emeritus Professor Lee Seng Lip of the Department of Civil Engineering. He is part of the fond memories in my childhood.
